In the fall of 2011, my band and I spent a week at White Star Sound in Virginia with my friend and producer, Jamie Candiloro (Ryan Adams, R.E.M.) and tracked a collection of songs I had been writing over the past two years. The songs were written for different reasons, but this particular collection is some of the most intense, emotional and personal work I’ve done to date. Fading Light is my reawakening.
I like to think each new song I write is better than the last. I don’t write as many these days, but hopefully I make up for the lack of quantity with quality. We had no expectations with this recording, but honestly its changed the game for us. Just 5 dudes in someone’s basement playing some songs. No click-tracks, no overdubs, no auto-tune. Just playing, for real.
I had some help on the production of this one from my good friend Chaim Rubenstein. It’s definitely got a blue eyed soul thing going on. But some of it is straight up country. The track “key” is probably my favorite. I could listen to Jimmy Stelling play banjo all day.
I recorded Blue Dreams in a few hours one day back in 2004. I haven’t heard it in years. I don’t often go back and listen to the old stuff, but several people that I’ve come across in my travels say it’s their favorite album of mine. Just me and an acoustic guitar. See what I sounded like 42,000 cigarettes ago….
